About the work

The ancient Greeks travelled all over the oikoumene in sandals. But on arriving at a feast they always “cast them aside” and dined barefoot.

For many years this box was used to ship paintings by different artists. It crossed seas and oceans, countries and continents, travelling by plane, truck, train and ship. Its last journey was from Germany to Moscow, to the artist's studio, carrying one of Cherednichenko's paintings back from the Berlin exhibition. After that it stood in the studio for about five years.

The box lived a bright, eventful life, and its route was never fully planned, although it was made as a purely utilitarian object.

Having grasped the remarkable fate of a simple box, the human brain can give value to its life. Arriving at the feast, we will not “cast it aside” as something no longer needed, but place it at the centre of the table and admire it as a remarkable phenomenon of art.
